Onam is one of the famous festivals celebrated by the Hindus of India who live in the Indian state of Kerala. Onam is among the most highly awaited religious festivals in India. This is a harvesting festival that is commemorated by Keralites and Malayalis with great splendor and enthusiasm. This is celebrated in the month of Shravana, in Shukla Paksha on the Chaturdashi Tithi. This year in 2023, 29 August will mark the celebration of Onam.
Story Behind Onam Celebration
King Mahabali was a generous and great ruler who ruled over Kerala. As per Hindu mythology, the kingdom under King Mahabali’s reign was peaceful and prosperous. Deities who were the enemy of demons desired to end Mahabali’s reign. Therefore they sent Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu in his Vamana Avatar asked for land from Mahabali. Lord Vishnu just asked for three feet of land, and with his two steps, he covered all the world.
Later Lord Vishnu asked Mahabali for a place to step his third step. The generous king requested Lord Vishnu to place his feet on his head. Lord Vishnu was impressed by this and blessed King Mahabali with a chance to visit Kerala, his kingdom once a year. This is the main reason behind the celebration of Onam by Keralites and Malayalis.
Malayalis and Keralites celebrate Onam with great fervor and enthusiasm. By giving an efficient harvest, they show their gratitude towards the land. On this day, houses are decorated with flowers, rangolis, and garlands. Women dress up in sarees and prepare sweets and a variety of dishes. This is a great opportunity for the people of Kerala to celebrate this day far from work, with family, friends, and relatives.
People organize boat races, music competitions, and dance competitions within the communities. On this day sweets and food are distributed to the needy people. On this day donations and charity are also made. Lord Vamana along with King Mahabali is venerated on this day for the happiness, prosperity, and longevity of all family members.
