The birthday of Prophet Muhammad is observed by Sufi and Barelvi Muslims. This holiday is known as Eid-e-Milad un Nabi or Eid-e-Milad. It also goes by the names Nabid and Mawlid in standard Arabic.
Eid-E-Milad Un Nabi 2023: Date
The Islamic calendar differs from the one we use on a daily basis because it depends on the sighting of the crescent moon. Shia Muslims observe Eid-e-Milad on the 17th of the same month, while Sunni Muslims observe it on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal. Eid-e-Milad will take place this year in Saudi Arabia on September 27 and in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other parts of the same region on September 28.
History and Significance
The Fatimids were the first to propose observing the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, which may be dated back to the early four Rashidun Caliphs of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad is said to have been born in Mecca on the twelfth day of Rabi’ al-awwal in 570 CE, according to certain Muslims. Eid-e-Milad, which is celebrated on the day Prophet Muhammad died, can be a mournful occasion for some even though “Mawlid” in everyday Arabic refers to giving birth.
Around the eleventh century, this holiday began to gain greater recognition after being first recognized formally in Egypt. At first, only a specific subset of Shia Muslims in the area participated in the celebration. In the 12th century, Eid-e-Milad began to spread to locations like Syria, Morocco, Turkey, and Spain. Eventually, certain Sunni Muslim communities also started to observe it.
