National Engineer’s Day is celebrated on 15th September every year. The day is observed to honour the legendary engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. It is his birth anniversary where seminars and events are organised to highlight his contribution and achievements as well as honour all the engineers around the country.
The history behind Engineer’s Day
The legendary Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born in 1860. He completed his degree in Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Mysore before changing his interest and went on to study engineering in the most prestigious college of engineering in Asia i.e College of Science in Pune.
He started his career by working in the Public Works Department for the Government of Bombay where he worked on many projects including the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore and a patented irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune.
Because of his knowledge and skills, she was honoured as the 19th Diwan of Mysore. He served from 1912 till 1918 where he received many honours such as India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. In 1917, he also played a crucial role in establishing the Government Engineering College at Bangalore later its name was changed to honour his legacy.
Back in 1968, the government of India honoured him because of his many achievements in civil engineering by recognizing his birth anniversary on September 15th as National Engineer’s Day.
