Vijaydashmi popularly known as Dussehra is one of the most auspicious festivals in the Hindu community. It is usually celebrated on the 10th after a nine-day festival of Navratri. The festival also commences the Diwali preparations as it is celebrated 20 days after Dussehra.
This year it will be celebrated on 24th October 2023. The day is celebrated with full enthusiasm and jovial. Youth especially love to celebrate this day with firecrackers and burning idols of Ravana.
It is regarded as the most vital part of the Hindu community. The day when Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana shows good always wins over evil. The term Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit which means ten (dasha) defeat (hara)’ in English as Ravana has ten heads. Usually, it is observed on the 10th month of Ashvina which falls in October-November in the Gregorian calendar.
Many rituals are performed on the day of Dussehra of Aparajita Puja, Seema Avalanghan and Shami Puja. All the pujas are performed in the Aparahna time according to Hindu traditions. It should be noted that Dussehra is not a part of Durga Puja.
On this day, a nine-day celebration of Maa Durga comes to an end. During the day, idols of Maa Durga are immersed in holy water and in the evening, people set fire to statues of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kunbhakaran.
History & Significance
As mentioned above, the festival holds great significance in Hindu mythology. The day promotes the victory of good over evil. Lord Rama defeated the demon King Ravana as well as his army of evil after a prolonged battle. Since then the day Ravana was killed is celebrated as Dussehra.
