The Malayalam New Year, often referred to as Chingam 1, is a significant event that is enthusiastically observed in Kerala, India. The first month in Kerala’s Malayalam calendar is called Chingam. The first day of the Chingam month, which falls on the Gregorian calendar often around August, marks the start of the New Year. This is the beginning of a new Kolla Varsham.

History and Significance
For the people of Kerala, the month of Chingam is very significant. As per custom, Onam is observed roughly ten days after Chingam 1. Front yards are decorated with flower carpets throughout this time until Onam.
The Vishu festival and the Malayalam New Year might occasionally be confused. In Kerala, there are two significant agricultural seasons: Medam and Chingam. Farming starts in Medam (April–May) and ends in Chingam (August), which is When Onam is Celebrated.
Contrarily, Vishu occurs in April or May according to the conventional calendar. Vishu, the first day of the Medam month, marks the beginning of Kerala’s astronomical New Year, which is significant to note.
Keralans have the belief that during Vishu, Lord Krishna vanquished the evil demon Narakasura. Some people also believe that the celebration represents the sun rising from the east and Lord Ram’s victory over the demon ruler Ravana.

A lamp called Nilavilakku is lit next to the pot as a sign of optimism and fortune. The Sabarimala and Guruvayur temples are frequented by many people. If they come in the morning, some people get coins. Children also receive money from older family members, known as “Kaineettam.” Families have a delicious dinner together called Vishu Sadhya, which includes dishes like semiya payasam, tomato rasam, and beans thoran.
