Hartalika Teej, here Teej denotes the 3rd day after no moon night (Amavsya) or the full moon night (Purnima). The festival of Hartalika Teej is one of the auspicious festivals observed by Hindu ladies across the country. It is mostly celebrated in Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand as well as Madhya Pradesh.
The festival is dedicated to Maa Parvati, it is when she got married to Lord Shiva. This year i.e. 2023 it will be celebrated on 18th September.
Significance
As stated it is mostly celebrated by Hindu women, they observe the day with full devotion. It is being said that if you are single and keep this fast religiously then you will meet your soulmate quickly, just like Maa Parvati met Lord Shiva. The main aim behind this fast is to achieve blissful marital status.
Hartalika Katha
Hartalika denotes “abduction by a female friend”. As per Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati incarnated as Shailputri, the daughter of Himalaya. As per Narad Muni’s advice, her father decided to get her married to Lord Vishnu, however, Parvati wasn’t comfortable with the decision so one of her friends secretly took her to a dense forest so her father wouldn’t make her marry against her wish.
On the 3rd day of ’Bhadrapada, Goddess Parvati made a Shivalinga from leaves and her hair. Impressed with her love and affection, Lord Shiva chose her Parvati as his wife. Thankfully they both got married with her father’s blessings. From there, the day is celebrated as Haritalika Teej as Goddess Parvati’s female (aalika) friend takes her to a forest so that she can marry her only true love.
