History
The idea or the foundation stone for the creation of the International Day of Democracy was led by Qatar. In November 2007, the UNGA adopted a resolution with the title, “Support by the United Nations system of efforts of governments to promote and consolidate a new or restored democracy.” The resolution urged all exiting governments at that time to expand and strengthen democracy. On 15 September 2008, numerous legislative events were conducted across the globe to celebrate the first International Day of Democracy.
