The interest in music was kindled by Toby Keith during his summer visits to his grandmother in Fort Smith where she owned a Billie Garner’s Supper Club. a number of musicians used to perform at the club and Toby Keith used to watch it. He started doing odd jobs around the club and soon started to play with the bands.

Toby Keith finished his graduation from Moore High School and worked as a derrick hand in the oil fields. His hard work paid dividends and he soon rose to the post of operation manager. He did not lose interest in his first passion which was music and while working with the oil industry.
He and his bunch of close friends Scott Webb, Keith Cory, David “Yogi” Vowell and Danny Smith, with a few others, formed the Easy Money Band. The band performed at local pubs and often Toby Keith had to leave the performance in between to fulfill his duties at the oil field.
The slump in the oil industry in 1982 also hit; the oil industry in Oklahoma began a rapid decline and Keith soon found himself unemployed. He returned to playing football and played defensive end with the semi-pro Oklahoma City Drillers while continuing to perform with his band.
However he continued to pursue his music but his family and friends doubted if he would succeed. However things started looking up and in 1984, Easy Money began performing at the honky-tonk circuit in Oklahoma and Texas.
